Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction and Climate Adaptation Workshop Organized in Çorlu

As Istanbul Enerji A.Ş. technical team, we participated in the “Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction and Climate Adaptation Workshop” organized by Çorlu Municipality.

The workshop was attended by Ahmet Sarıkurt, Mayor of Çorlu Municipality; Yüksel Yalçın, General Manager of Istanbul Enerji A.Ş.; Prof. Dr. Lokman Hakan Tecer, Dean of Çorlu Engineering Faculty of Namık Kemal University; Hüseyin Erdoğan, Çorlu District Director of National Education; Güner Çetin, İbrahim Turgut Bolat and Hakan Öztürk, Deputy Mayors; İsmail Gülsen, Head of Environmental Protection and Control Department of Tekirdağ Metropolitan Municipality; municipal council members; Hülya Perin, President of Çorlu City Council; officials of public institutions and organizations; neighborhood mukhtars; representatives of chambers and non-governmental organizations; and members of the press.

“We are together to tackle the threat of climate change”

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, which started with a moment of silence and the reading of the National Anthem, Yüksel Yalçın, General Manager of Istanbul Enerji A.Ş., made important statements about what needs to be done for Çorlu to become resilient to climate change and a livable environment within the framework of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP).

Mr. Ahmet Sarıkurt, Mayor of Çorlu Municipality, then took the floor and stated that the gathering was organized to combat the threat of climate change, which threatens the future of the whole world. He continued by emphasizing once again that climate change has devastating effects and that combating this situation is of great importance in order to ensure the sustainability of the ecosystem we live in and to leave a healthy world to our children, who are the guarantee of our future. Then, according to the Paris Agreement, to which our country became a party in 2021, global efforts are being made to keep the increase in global average temperature below 2 degrees compared to the pre-industrialization period, and to keep this increase below 1.5 degrees. He mentioned that the Paris Agreement, which aims to reduce global emissions by at least 40 percent by 2030, aims to achieve a net zero emission target in 2050.

“We Must Meet on a Common Strategy and Goal”

“The concept of a Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan was developed by the European Commission Covenant of Mayors. Designed to provide a detailed overview of a city’s energy situation and the emissions it produces, this plan aims to identify measurable actions to reduce emissions, identify energy efficiency measures and adopt renewable energy targets, and propose actions to adapt to climate change. These actions will be a guide for the Strategic Plans to be prepared by all our institutions in the future. We can reduce emissions from energy use, industrial processes, agricultural activities and the waste sector in our city by meeting on a common strategy and goal and reach our 2030 targets.”

Various Topics Discussed at the Workshop

Following the speeches, Dr. Ayşegül Özkan made a presentation on “Çorlu District Greenhouse Gas Inventory” and “Climate Adaptation”.

After the presentations, the participants were informed about the greenhouse gas emission analysis results of the district and possible climate change risks in the district. Afterwards, Ersin Aydın, Savaş Alkan, Aycan Yunusoğulları and Uğur Demirel moderated the group to discuss the proposals and projects with the participants. At this stage, the participants discussed the emission mitigation activities that can be implemented in Çorlu district borders, implementation of projects in order of importance, obstacles that may arise in implementation, determination of climate risks and vulnerabilities, identification of sectors that will be affected by future impacts, identification of vulnerable population groups that are expected to be most affected, identification of the frequency of climate change hazards, identification of adaptation and mitigation targets and actions to reduce the impacts of climate change.

Participants also exchanged views on priority steps for the future of the city. Nearly 100 project proposals emerged.

While the preparations for the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan, carried out in cooperation with Çorlu Municipality and Istanbul Enerji A.Ş., are nearing the end, the Climate Action Plan Report, which will be shared with the public in January, will enable projects that will prevent climate change and take measures to reduce carbon emissions by 40% within the borders of Çorlu district.
