GREEN TRANSFORMATION STARTED IN SARIYER

Sarıyer Municipality took the first step to create a Sustainable Energy Climate Action Plan within the scope of the protocol signed with Istanbul Energy.

The climate crisis brings with it various risks such as drought, heat waves, sea level rise, food crisis and increasing energy demand. Local governments have a great responsibility to eliminate these risks and leave a green world for future generations. Sarıyer Mayor Şükrü Genç, our General Manager Yüksel Yalçın, İSKİ General Manager Şafak Başa, Prof. Dr. Levent Kurnaz, Sarıyer Municipality deputy mayors, unit managers, mukhtars, NGO representatives attended the launch meeting held at Boğaziçi Culture and Arts Center (BKSM). We signed a cooperation protocol with Sarıyer Municipality at the meeting.

WE ARE AT ODDS WITH NATURE

Opening the program, Sarıyer Mayor Şükrü Genç started his speech by saying that he has been all over the country both as a mayor and as an engineer and continued as follows; “We are gradually leaving being a part of the ecosystem. We cannot read the disasters we are experiencing correctly, we do not try to understand the environment and we are stubborn with nature. The price of being stubborn with nature is heavy. In fact, nature does not take revenge, it just acts according to its own rules. When visiting the disaster area, our citizens were describing the disaster by saying that they had never seen rain like this before. When we told them that the change in the rainfall regime may increase even more after this, and the diversity of risks, they said that no one informed us about climate change, disruption of ecological balance, and increased rainfall.

WE AIM TO POPULARIZE SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEMS

Yüksel Yalçın, our General Manager, gave the following statements in his speech; “Enerji Istanbul was established to produce energy projects, especially renewable energy sources, and to spread the energy culture in the city. Our strongest area is energy production. As of today, we have established a 37 MW Biomass Energy Plant in Silivri Seymen. Istanbul Energy Seymen Biomass Energy Plant carries out both the regular sorting of the garbage of the European Side of Istanbul in a way that does not harm the environment and the processes of converting it into energy by extracting it so that methane gas does not harm the environment. We are also working to install solar energy systems. So far, we have installed over 10 MW of solar energy systems in IBB. The aim of Istanbul Energy is to make solar energy systems widespread.

THERE IS A SERIOUS WEAKNESS IN TERMS OF AN INSTITUTIONAL ROADMAP

Studies on how energy will be produced and consumed are really important. We are making Sustainable Climate Energy Action Plans. So far, Çorlu and Büyükçekmece have been completed. The number of municipalities in Turkey that have completed these studies is around 16-17. There is a serious weakness in terms of an institutional road map. We are all architects of global warming. We did not use energy as we should. Now we are here to see how we can repair the structure we have broken. We need to stop this trend. If the necessary measures are not taken, the global warming limit of 1 and a half degrees is expected to be exceeded by 2052. We need to switch to renewable energy. We need to take these measures together. With Sustainable Climate Energy Action Plans, we aim to predict how a city will be affected by climate conditions in the future, turn strategic decisions into plans and spread them to the society base.”
