The Büyükçekmece Lake Floating Solar Power Plant, with an installed capacity of 240 kWe, became operational in April 2017 through a collaboration between İSKİ and İstanbul Enerji A.Ş. The total installation area of the plant is approximately 2,900 m². For efficiency comparison purposes, a 30 kWe section of the floating PV system was installed on land, while the remaining 210 kW was installed on the lake. Büyükçekmece Lake FSP is the first grid-connected floating solar application in Turkey.
Set up as an R&D project, the system covers 60% of the water surface, playing an important role in preventing water loss due to evaporation. The plant contains a total of 960 polycrystalline photovoltaic panels with a capacity of 260 kWp. The Floating Solar Power Plant employs two different floating systems: one using HDPE floats (120 kW) and the other a combination of HDPE floats and steel construction (90 kW).
The Floating Solar Power Plant generates enough electricity to meet the annual needs of 202 households and prevents 164 tons of CO2 emissions per year. This is equivalent to removing 135 cars from traffic or planting 4,200 trees, providing significant environmental benefits.
We are striving to implement energy investments and programs in line with sustainable, technological, and clean energy policies, primarily with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, as well as the public and private sectors.
