Biomass energy is seen as a suitable and important energy source since it is an inexhaustible resource, can be obtained everywhere, and helps socio-economic developments especially for rural areas. With the increasing population of Istanbul, energy production activities from biomass (household solid wastes, treatment sludge, energy plants, etc.) have gained momentum by using the available resources in the most efficient way.
Population growth in Istanbul paved the way for the most efficient use of resources, and energy production activities from renewable energy were accelerated including biomass energy.
Biomass energy plant of Istanbul Energy Co. located in Silivri Seymen is the biomass power plant with the highest installed power in a single center in Turkey with 37 MW. With an installed power of 37 MW, it prevents the emission of methane gas, which corresponds to the annual electricity need of approximately 190 thousand households (760.000 people), to 1.45 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent to the carbon reduction of 37 thousand trees in terms of greenhouse effect as well as providing an environmental benefit equivalent to elimination of carbon emission generated by 940 thousand vehicles.
